Dear Green Bay Rotarians,

This has been a busy week for me, so I know this newsletter won’t be full of text – yet it is full of information!! Last Monday, our speaker was Steven Baker who is a coach for the Green Bay Area Titans, a new youth basketball league housed at the Kroc Center. Steven is a former UWGB basketball player and is passionate and dedicated to building confidence and integrity in our community youth, using basketball as the vehicle. I think we were all excited about his commitment, and look forward to our Rotary Club working with his group – perhaps even sponsoring a game? Sounds like a game plan to me!!

Welcome to Spring!!

On Monday March 18th our Rotary club was joined by Judge Thomas Walsh who talked to us about the difficulty for the State Public Defender’s office to find lawyers to take on cases for indigent defendants in the Brown County Circuit Court. The problem is largely due to the $40/hour pay rate that has been in place for over two decades, a rate that is well-under the $70 (going to $100/hour rate) of court-appointed lawyers and paid by counties. The consequence of this disparity means that there are huge backlogs developing in the courts and defendants sit in jail waiting for a public defender, denying them of their constitutional rights to a speedy trial.
