Welcome to Spring!!

On Monday March 18th our Rotary club was joined by Judge Thomas Walsh who talked to us about the difficulty for the State Public Defender’s office to find lawyers to take on cases for indigent defendants in the Brown County Circuit Court. The problem is largely due to the $40/hour pay rate that has been in place for over two decades, a rate that is well-under the $70 (going to $100/hour rate) of court-appointed lawyers and paid by counties. The consequence of this disparity means that there are huge backlogs developing in the courts and defendants sit in jail waiting for a public defender, denying them of their constitutional rights to a speedy trial.
