Established in 1991 by the RI Board of Directors, the Service Above Self Award is Rotary International’s highest honor for an individual Rotarian who embodies Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self”, with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others. This is an internationally competitive award, with a maximum of 150 recipients selected worldwide each year, and only one per district.
Figure 1 Tom Guyette wins the prestigious Rotary International Service Award!
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
I just spent the weekend in the Dells at the 2019 DualCon Conference, a joint conference of Districts 6220 and District 6270. While the weather was not very cooperative, there was plenty of warmth inside the Glacier Canyon’s meeting rooms. The main purpose of the conference was to inform our participants about two major crises in our own backyards, Human Trafficking and Opioid Addiction. Two sessions were held on Saturday afternoon, with panels of service professionals and individuals who had been personally affected by these issues. It was seriously intense. To prepare for this, our Friday afternoon session, presented by Mr. Thom Cody, talked about Tackling Elephants - noting that Rotarians have been successfully tacking huge international issues for decades. As Rotarians, we have been promoting peace, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education growing local economies and fighting diseases like Polio.
Remember the only way you can eat an elephant is one bite at a time!!
Of course, the meeting had truly awesome and inspirational speakers, a time to socialize with our fellow District 6220 Rotarians, eat well, celebrate Tom Guyette’s award (see above) and dance!!
Preparations have begun for next year’s joint conference. Let us again celebrate Rotary at the District Convention 2020 May 1st & 2nd at the Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center, Oshkosh.
